Those born 55 years ago, or before, have several retirement housing options that are not generally available to the rest of the population. As a certified Senior Real Estate Specialist® (and over 55, myself!), I am well versed in those housing options, in the real estate needs, and in the lifestyle preferences of this growing consumer group.
As of mid-April 2016, there were 258 homes listed as suitable for the 55+ age group in Middlesex County, 68 in Somerset County, and 31 in Union County.
Retirement Choices
Below, I’ve gathered together some information about the three main retirement housing choices you can make (other than buying a “regular” house or condo).
Retirement Housing Option: 55+ Development
New Jersey is such a lovely state, that many people are choosing to remain here, rather than move to warmer climes. As a result, developers have created many housing complexes targeted specifically to those 55 years of age, or older. The 55+ developments (sometimes called “active adult” communities) typically offer a mix of detached houses and multi-unit condos or townhouses. They also include a variety of community services, such as a club house with exercise room and party room, tennis courts, swimming pool, and golf course. For worry-free exterior maintenance and snow removal, as well as all of these community services, you will pay a monthly fee.
Retirement Housing Option: Retirement Residence
A retirement residence (also called a “continuing-care community”) usually offers many living options, ranging from completely independent living to round-the-clock care. Most such residences are multi-unit buildings. Retirement residences run, round the clock, to support the retirees’ lifestyle. In addition to dining rooms that offer varied, nutritious meals, the residences have extensive exercise, activity, and excursion programs that enrich your life. A nursing staff supports the health care needs of the residents.

Retirement Housing Option: Assisted Living
If you, or a family member, have reached the stage of life when more focused care is important, then you may want to consider an assisted living environment (also called a “nursing home”). Nutritious meals, round-the-clock care, and activities appropriate to residents’ abilities are provided by these homes.
